meeting with IIT and IIM directors

Government today held a high-level meeting with IIT and IIM directors to gauge the preparedness of their institutes for implementing the OBC quota in the current academic year.The meeting between directors of the Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Management and HRD Ministry officials went into details about the infrastructural requirements for increased students.The current academic year is starting from July 20. Earlier also the IITs have said that they have a space crunch and other infrastructural problems. Among seven IITs, the one in Delhi, which is the smallest, is hard pressed with an early deadline to accommodate the increased number of students.

Patwa Toli

In the last 10 years, 25 students from the nondescript hamlet have got into various Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and 75 have entered Regional Engineering Colleges, now known as National Institutes of Technology.No less than eight boys from Patwa Toli, a non-descript locality on the north eastern end of the Gaya municipal area have made it to the IIT this year.The boys, all of them who belong to the small weaving community known as Patwas, have been doing consistently well at the IIT and other state-level engineering entrance tests for several years now. The Patwas, comprising about 900 families of traditional weavers.Till about a decade back, the Gaya Patwas were regarded as one of the most educationally backward communities engaged in weaving from an early age to earn their bread.But now the boys have started weaving a new dream, which, besides promising to change the fortune of the hard-pressed Patwas, have given them a new enviable status as about 30 boys from the community make it to the engineering colleges, including the prestigious IITs, each year.The process began in 1991, when Jitendra Kumar became the first Patwa to make it to the IIT.Jitendra Kumar, son of Thakur Prasad, was the one who wove the 'engineering dream' in the village. He wrote the 1991 entrance
examination and got admission at Banaras Hindu University, whose Institute of Technology is one of the eight IITs. When he came back to the village, he urged the villagers to motivate their children to become engineers.Kumar is now working at PricewaterhouseCoopers-Global, a software consultancy in New Jersey, USA. While studying for his engineering degree, he used to assemble young students of the village near the Durgasthan(mandir) to teach them learning skills and the way to write exams. He proved to be a big inspiration. In 1997, 13 boys got into IITs and 53 entered various Regional Engineering Colleges.Before he left for the United States in 1997, Kumar set up several study centres at the village to train aspirant engineers.The IIT grad set up an association Nav Prayas in 1999 motivate the youth of the village. It organises debates and seminars, and conducts talent search examinations to identify students with aptitude. The candidates selected are divided into groups and given training. Villagers have chipped in by offering rooms in their houses to conduct study centres. Now this is a village which is passionate about education; almost obsessed with it. Children of many weavers are now holding important posts in government agencies like the Defence Research and Development Organisation and top-notch software companies like Wipro and Infosys. Some have landed jobs in USA.

DU Admission

The admission process in DU commenced on Monday with common admission OMR (Optical Mark Reader) forms made available to the students at fifteen Admission Information Centres across the capital.more than 25,000 common pre-admission forms were sold at all the 15 admission information centres in the Capital on the very first day comprising 3500 which were sold alone at Arts Faculty.Apart from the Integrated Centralised Registration (ICR) forms, colleges are allowed to sale forms at personal level.As per the Supreme Court's order and the Centre's direction, the varsity has introduced provision for the OBC students in a separate column of the form. The Delhi University will implement nine percent OBC quota this year followed by the 18 percent next year to achieve the total 27 percent the third year. The varsity has also enhanced its seats by eighteen percent to keep the seats for general students intact.Students, aspiring for under-graduate courses can purchase and submit admission forms till June 16. The first cut-off list will be announced on June 26 followed by subsequent cut-off lists on the later date. The DU's new academic session will start on July 16

ALIGARH MUSLIM University (AMU) has declared its bachelors in technology (Btech) entrance-test result. Pranay Sharma, Lucknow, and Divyani, Balya, are toppers amongst 19,000 participants from all over India.branch wise admission process would be starting from July 8 to July 10. Admission window at the ’Dean, Faculty of Engineering & Technology’ will be opened for Btech computer, electronic and petrochemical on July 8, 2008, for mechanical and chemical streams, the date would be July 9, 2008 and electricals and civil on July 10, 2008. Time of admission will be 9am to 5pm.Admission process will be complete at the office of the dean, faculty of engineering and technology. Reverse brain drain

It is reported by a survey conducted by Evalueserve (India emerging as the preferred career destination for IITians), a New Delhi-based business-research company, that during 1964-2001, every third IITian went abroad and majority of them went to the US.But,the survey said that a reversal of trend has started after 2001. And if we include the pass-out in 2008, it is a surprisingly welcome change that more than 84 per cent of the IITians have chosen to stay in India. The survey also says that belief among the IITians that the US offers a better standard of living has seen a sharp decline from 12 per cent to zero.The era of economic liberalisation in India started in 1991 and with that, India has been witnessing the development in its economy.The Indian economy, which is fourth largest country of the world in terms of purchasing power parity, is poised to overtake Japan and become a major economic power within the next 10 years.

CBSE SYLLABI FOR BIHAR SCHOOLS

Bihar education board will follow the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum in Classes 11 and 12 from the new academic session as a step to improve education standards in the state. The Bihar education department has already signed an agreement with the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) that is responsible for developing the CBSE courses.This will help the state board schools adopt the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) devised by the human resource development ministry.The NCF 2005 was prepared after months of deliberation among experts from the state education departments, NCERT, the human resource development (HRD) ministry and many independent educational luminaries.The framework aims at improving school education and making it more interactive and student friendly. It works as a vision document for the school course curriculum that can reform and enrich studies at the school level.

IIST

Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) in Thiruvananthapuram, ISRO’s is planning new begining on the academic side.Into its second semester, the IIST is actively pursuing tie-up possibilities with some of the best like-minded scientific institutions abroad to give its students an edge in space education. Among the institutions it has approached are the prestigious California Institute of Technology (Caltech), which runs NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, among other things, and the International Space University in Strasbourg, France.Co-operation with space agencies like the NASA, Japan’s JAXA and others are possibilities for the future. For the time-being, the student population will be entirely Indian as the IIST is meant to answer ISRO’s manpower crunch.

NEW CAMPUSES OF KU

The University of Kashmir decided to set up two additional campuses in the frontier regions of Kargil and Kupwara to meet the public demand for higher education in these remote areas.The approval to establish the campuses was taken today during a meeting of the Kashmir University Council (KUC).The twin Universities of Kashmir and Jammu will have as many as eight campuses spread across the state, including the two new additional campuses.Further, processes to set up new campuses at Anantnag, Baramulla and Leh have already begun.The KUC had earlier approved setting up of the Department of Food Science and Technology with introduction of five year integrated masters and doctoral programme in food science and technology.It had also approved the revival of Mushir-ul-Haq Chair for inter-faith studies. The chair would be set up in the name of the former vice chancellor of the university and eminent Islamic scholar who was assassinated by militants on April 10 in 1990.In another decision, the council approved the transfer of the Institute of Music and Fine Arts, Srinagar to the University of Kashmir. The institute is currently managed by by the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages.

There is an urgent need to launch a 'National PhD Initiative' in a mission mode to increase the engineering and science PhDs output.The study carried out by IIT-Mumbai professors Rangan Banerjee and Vinayak P Muley of the Department of Energy Science and Engineering.India's doctorate degrees are less than one per cent of graduate engineering degrees while this percentage is much higher for most of the other countries studied 9 per cent USA, 10 per cent UK, 8 per cent Germany and 3 per cent Korea.

The Central Board of Secondary Education on Tuesday announced the results for the All India Engineering/Architecture Entrance Examination (AIEEE).The results are available on CBSE's website, www.cbse.nic.in and www.aieee.nic.in.Students qualifying the entrance examination would be eligible for admission in various National Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Information Technology and Deemed Universities. The entrance was conducted on April 27 at 1299 centres in 75 cities across the country and abroad.This year 7,92,752 candidates had appeared for the AIEEE-2008.Anupam Dev Goyal has got the All India Rank 2.Anupam is in Mumbai preparing for the International Chemistry Olympiad which is to be held in Hungary.Abhinav Garg, who got the fourth rank in AIEEE had bagged the third position in IIT-JEE in the country. The Central Information Commission has directed the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to provide details to one of its professors on his RTI plea seeking information relating to cut-off marks for the Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE) 2006.Prof Rajeev Kumar, through his three RTI applications, had wanted to know the cut-off marks for the JEE 2006 -- the procedure and the formulae for arriving at them for each subject.

Himachal Pradesh government offered the Centre to facilitate setting-up of a temporary campus of the institute at National Institute of Engineering, Hamirpur.
The IIT for Himachal Pradesh was announced by Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on October 2 in Shimla.Gonernment says ,NIT Hamirpur, meets most of the parameters to start admissions till the new campus for the IIT is developed.Gonernment claimed that nearly 530 acres of land has already been identified in Mandi district and work would start soon.

IITK annual convocation

The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur conferred degrees on 994 students of various courses during the annual convocation ceremony .Prof Shin Choon Fong, Director National University of Singapore gave the convocation address.Fong also presented the President's Gold Medal to Computer Science and Engineering student Anindiya Deko.

Kerala School of Mathematics

Chief Minister of Kerla will inaugurate the Kerala School of Mathematics on the premises of the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) at Kunnamangalam on June 3.The school, promoted as a joint venture of the National Board of Higher Mathematics of the Department of Atomic Energy and the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE). Kozhikode also have Indian Institute of ManagementKozhikode (IIM-K) and the National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT-C). Another research institute in the district is the Indian Institute of Spices Research.This is the second such institution in the country, the first being in Mumbai. The institute would be developed into an Indian Institute of Mathematical Sciences in due course. Kerala was known the home of mathematical research during the medieval period. There was a school of mathematics in Malabar with its activities centred in Thrikandiyoor, Alathiyoor and nearby places. The mathematicians associated with this school included Madhava of Sangamagrama, Parameswara of Alathiyoor, Neelakantha Somayaji, Jyethadeva and Achyutha Pisharody.

Gulf countries cbse result

97 per cent of students from Gulf countries have passed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 10 examinations - much better than their Indian counterparts. 97.13 percentage of students in Gulf have passed this year as against 96.68 per cent last year.Overall, 87.08 per cent students in India have qualified in the examinations.This year, 10,327 students including 5,116 girls from 103 Gulf schools appeared for the exams.These students from countries like the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain appeared for the exams in 37 centres in March

Punjab School Education Board Class XII result

In Punjab School Education Board Class XII annual exams overall pass percentage was 70.01 per cent, over 8 per cent more than last year’s 61.99 pass percentage. Of the total 2,66,423 students who appeared in the exams, 1,86,532 passed.While 82.9 pass percentage of commerce group is the highest,humanities stream 69.15 pass percentage was lowest. Vocational group pass percentage is 72.11 per cent, while 70.4 per cent of science group students cleared the exams.Again, girls overtook boys with overall pass percentage of 75.89 per cent.while the boys secured 64.69pass percentage.Shilpy of B.C.M. Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, is the overall topper with 94.9 per cent marks. A student of humanities group, she secured 427 of total 450 marks.While Anu Sharma of B.C.M. Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, secured second position with 422 marks, which make 93.8 per cent, Shelly Vyas of the same school is third with 93.3 per cent marks. Shelly got 420 marks.Except vocational group, which Manik of Government Senior Secondary Model School, Ludhiana, topped with 396 marks, the girls topped all other streams. While Shipra Monga of Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School, Ferozepur, topped science group with 412 marks, Navpreet Kaur Nagi topped the commerce stream with 403 marks.

UP Board Class X result

UP Board witnessed the worst ever result in the last six years. At 40.07 per cent, the total pass percentage has taken a 34.34 per cent plunge from last year’s 74.41 per cent.Of the 25,71,935 examinees, 10,30,490 were declared successful. Of them 51.35 per cent were girls — the top three on the merit list were girls. The percentage of successful boys was even less — 31.48 per cent.At 60 per cent, the pass percentage in the intermediate examination this year had also dropped by 29.39 as compared to last year. The last time Class X results had hit such a low was in 2003, when only 40.93 per cent students had cleared the examination.Haripriya Pandey of Carmel Girls Inter College, Gorakhpur, has topped the state this year by securing 88 per cent marks. Second on the merit list is Anjali Verma (87.5%) of Lucknow, while Pratibha Verma of Sultanpur and Rita Singh of Barabanki jointly bagged the third position (87.16%).Kanpur district remained on the forefront by giving 34 students to the merit list.In the district level, Ballia topped the charts with 67.92per cent students clearing the Board followed by Mathura(63.41%)and Kaushambi(56.68%).The pass percentage of Lucknow is only 38.89%

DU MET RESULT

DU MET ,an entrance conducted by DU for the three medical colleges affiliated to the university — Maulana Azad Medical College, Lady Hardinge Medical college and the University College of Medical Sciences. With 85% of the seats reserved for Delhi students, it's an important test on the academic calendar of city students.The test is conducted for around 450 seats in the three colleges. The remaining 15% of seats is for students from the rest of the country, who qualify through an entrance conducted by AIIMS.last year, the number of seats available were 410, but with both central university affiliated colleges — Lady Hardinge and UCMS — increasing seats for OBC reservation, the numbers have gone up. According to new research published in the journal Science, the "gender gap" in maths, long perceived to exist between girls and boys, disappears in societies that treat both sexes equally. When girls have equal access to education and other opportunities they do just as well as boys in maths tests.The research, led by Prof Paola Sapienza of Northwestern University in the US, investigated whether a global gender gap exists and whether it was the result of social engineering rather than intrinsic aptitude for the subject.research team came to the conclusion after looking at results of a standardised international exam taken by over 270,000 15-year-olds from 40 countries in 2003.It was discovered that this was most likely to occur in the most gender equal societies such as Iceland, Sweden and Norway.

A Bihar boy Shitikanth has topped this year’s All India Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE) conducted for admissions to the Indian Institutes of Technology -11 years after Abhinav Kumar had made Bihar proud by topping prestigious exams in 1997.Son of Dr Arun Kumar Barnwal and Dr Anita Barnwal — both medical professionals, Shitikanth has been a constant performer. An alumnus of Patna's St Michael's High School, he scored 93% in Class X and 91% in Class XII CBSE exams. For the last two years he had been staying at Kota in Rajasthan where he had joined a coaching institute.He said that his favourite subject is Physics followed by Mathematics.But Chemistry, particularly Inorganic Chemistry, is a tough subject for him.Shitikanth did his class 10 from St Michael School in Patna.He went Kota in Rajasthan to prepare for IIT. Shitikanth would receive gold medal from Chief Justice of India for being topper in National Science Olympiad on June 1.Of the 3,11,258 candidates who appeared in the examination conducted on April 13, 8,652 candidates have been declared qualified to seek admission in the 6,872 seats in IITs at Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mumbai, Roorkee and some proposed new IITs, Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University and Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad.admissions to three more new IITs in Punjab, Gujarat and Orissa, other than at Hyderabad, Patna and Rajasthan, for the academic session 2008-09 are likely to be made through JEE-2008.From the Delhi zone, 51, 373 candidates appeared in the exam and 1, 549 qualified for admission. Nikhil Garg has topped the Delhi zone with an All-India sixth rank.This year 78,159 girls appeared for the JEE 2008 and 840 of them were able to crack it. The number of girl candidates qualifying the exam has increased by 43 per cent since last year.N. Vasuki from the Madras zone has topped the list of girl candidates, having secured an All-India 14th rank.This year, 72,116 OBC candidates appeared in JEE, of which 1,134 have qualified.Of the 28,393 candidates from the Scheduled Castes, 690 have qualified, whereas of the 8,514 examinees from the Scheduled Tribes’ category, 159 have cleared it.Twenty candidates with certified physical disabilities will be granted admission with relaxed norms.The examination was conducted at more than 600 centres across the country. For the first time, a JEE centre had been opened outside India at Dubai.Counselling for admission begins on June 17 for the declared All-India rank holders. Courses allocated to the successful candidates will be declared on June 30.Nishant Totla of Aurangabad secured second all india rank.Totla is still unsure of which IIT to opt for. Keen on doing a PhD in theoretical Physics or Mathematics, Totla considers IIT Kanpur and IIT Bombay as the ideal options.Mumbai topper Pritish Kamat too wants to pursue research.Pritish wants to take up either computer science or electrical engineering.This former student of Ruia stays with his mother, his aunt and his grandmother. Pritish lost his father when he was nine.Both Totla and Shitikanth have qualified for the International Physics Olympiad to be held at Vietnam in July.The number of students appearing for IIT JEE this year was 28 per cent more than in 2007.Nikhil Garg has topped IIT JEE from Delhi Zone.his father is a pathologist and his elder brother is studying MBBS from Safdarjung Hospital.Nikhil wants to pursue Computer engineering at IIT Delhi. The IIT-Joint Entrance Exam-2008 results released on Friday at 8 am.There are 4,600 seats available in the seven IITs in the country. The exam this year was conducted by IIT-Roorke.All the thirty students enrolled in Super 30, an innovative coaching institute in Bihar, have passed the highly competitive Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) this year, the institute announced here Friday. It is the first time that Super 30 achieved 100 percent success.Every year, Super 30 selects a group of 30 IIT aspirants from poor families and provides them with free coaching, food and accommodation.Bihar’s Additional Director-General of Police Abhyanand, who teaches physics at the institute, said this year Super 30 successful students include students from a minority community for the first time. Anand, who also runs the Ramanujam School of Mathematics, said Super 30 is supported by the income generated from the mathematics school, which has students who can afford to pay fees.Super 30 took shape five years ago. IIT GUJRAT

IIT Gujrat with 120 seats, will start functioning from the Gandhinagar Engineering College, Chandkheda, from the coming academic session.The sanctioned institute will have 40 seats each in mechanical, electrical, and chemical streams and award a four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree.The Chandkheda campus is already hosting an extension centre of the IIT-Powai (Mumbai) that conducts short-term high-end courses for mid-career engineering professionals in Gujarat’s industries.Though the state is not sure of when and where the new campus of IIT-Gujarat will come up, the government announced that it will try to locate it on the “knowledge corridor” between Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad.Indian Institute of Technology, Rajasthan would start functioning from the campus of IIT-Kanpur from the academic session 2008-09. This arrangement would continue for the next three years. Along with IIT-K, Prof Sanjay Govind Dhande would also be the director for IIT-R.the five new IITs would also function in a similar manner. While IIT-Chandigarh would function from IIT-Delhi campus, IIT-Hyderabad would be part of IIT-Chennai. Similarly, IIT-Ahmedabad would function from IIT-Bombay, IIT-Patna from IIT-Guwahati and IIT-Orissa from IIT-Kharagpur.The decision to start six new IITs from the existing campuses was taken to meet the rising demand of engineers in the country.

IIT-PUNJAB

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)for Punjab, will start functioning from this academic year, offering 120 seats. But it will be located on the IIT Delhi campus for the time being. The IIT campus of Punjab will come up at Ropar. This decision was taken during a meeting of a Central government team. The team also approved a 500-acre patch of land located in erstwhile Birla farms in Ropar for constructing the IIT campus. However, a final decision in this regard will be taken in Delhi.It has been decided that after conducting the classes for one year in Delhi, the operations would shift to Mohali till the time the campus at Ropar comes up. The team also saw some accommodation at Mohali where the campus would be shifted for the next academic year. They also saw the site at Ropar and approved the same.

SEE-UPTU RESULT

SEE 2008 topped by Vishvendra Kumar scoring 88.44 % marks.Over 2.60 lakh students had appeared in the SEE 2008 for about 66,362 seats in various engineering and technology courses like B.Tech, MBA, MCA and others.The maximum students appeared for B.Tech examinations. About 172,000 students took the B.Tech exams.

CPMT RESULT

Boys outclassed girls to find merit positions in Uttar Pradesh Combined Pre-Medical Test (CPMT)-2008, results of which were declared here Wednesday by Lucknow University.Only 25 girls have found place in the top 100 positions of the merit list.Tauhid Ahmad, a student from Mau district, topped the examination, securing 185 marks out of 200.About 74,000 students appeared in the CPMT conducted for admissions to various medical colleges of the state.in CPMT, seven out of top ten candidates are from the OBC category and 40 in top 100. Only two girls could make it to the top ten. Akshita from Muzaffarnagar at third place and Shraddha Shahu from Noida at sixth rank and both were OBCs.

DU Admissions

Admissions to Delhi University (DU) are due to start in less than a month and the premier univarsity is going all out this time to help college aspirants.DU has over 70 colleges.To answer the hundreds of queries that students generally have at this time, the university officials launched a helpline earlier this month.Helpline (011-27662507, 27662508), is manned by a panel of 17 faculty members and student counsellors. TNEA 2008

The Tamil Nadu government announced that counselling for medical and engineering courses in the state for the year 2008 would begin on July four and 11 respectively.applications for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA 2008) were issued from May 10. He said counselling for B E courses under general category would begin from July 11 and the last date was August 31.In Tamil Nadu, there were nearly 270 engineering colleges which account for 1.30 lakh seats. Till now, 1.35 lakh application forms had been sold and 20,000 filled forms were received. 1,445 additional seats had been allotted in government engineering colleges this year, including 360 seats in Anna University, Chennai. The seat matrix would be 65 per cent seats under government quota and 35 per cent seats under self-financing quota.

BIHAR SCHOOL EXAMINATION

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in Patna on officially released the results of the Matric and Inter finals. Gonernment announced a cash reward of Rs. 25,000 to the state toppers in Matric and Inter exams, Rs. 15,000 to the top ten in both categories, and Rs. 10,000 to the toppers in the districts.girls outshone boys by registering a success rate of 83.41 percent as against the boys' 76.06 percent.With over 5 lakh students appearing in the tests, the success rate was registered at 78.87 percent beating out last year's result of 68.48 percent. Altogether 54,896 students secured first division, 285,522 second division, and 57,438 third division.among the top ten toppers in science, eight are from Patna Science College with Preeti Kumari topping them all.

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced their results for class x which registered a pass percentage of 87.08 per cent.Girls outshone boys yet again in the examinations with an impressive pass percentage of 87.96 per cent. Boys' pass percentage was 86.46 per cent.Out of the six exam regions, Chennai topped the list of pass percentage with 95.26 per cent followed by Ajmer (94.22 per cent), Allahabad (89.10), Panchkula (89.07), Delhi (82.87) and Guwahati (57.29).A total of 7,65,095 candidates, including 4,49,742 boys, had registered for the exam held in March this year.The board had announced the results of the Chennai region on May 27. Results of the rest five region were announced on Thursday at 8 am.

Nalini Joshi

Nalini Joshi, an Australian of Indian origin, has become only the third woman in mathematics to be elected to the prestigious Australian Academy of Sciences (AAS), founded in 1954 by Australian Fellows of the Royal Society of London.
Joshi, head of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney, was made a fellow of AAS in recognition of her life-long achievements in the field of mathematics.Her mathematical research has helped to describe delicate and precise transitions that occur in many non-linear models of the real world.She completed the four-year degree with honours in applied mathematics and her doctorate at Princeton University in the US.Born in Myanmar to Indian origin grandparents hailing from Gujarat and Punjab, Joshi migrated to Australia in 1971.After working in various positions around Australia and overseas, she returned to the University of Sydney in 2002 as chair of applied mathematics, the first woman to be appointed a professor of mathematics at the University. In April 2007 she was appointed head of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, again becomingthe first woman to hold the position.

KITTEE -08

The results of KIIT Entrance Examination 2008 (KITTEE '08) conducted by KIIT University for admissions into B.Tech, MCA, Law, BBA & BCA, and MSc Biotechnology programmes were declared.Among 35,000 students who appeared in KIITEE ‘08, a total of 2507 students have been included in merit list for degree engineering programme, while 474, 301 and 609 students have been included for the MCA, Law and BBA & BCA courses respectively.Besides, 320 students have been included in merit list for MSc Biotechnology, while 246 have been kept for the Integrated MSc Biotechnology.The entrance examination was held at 75 centres across the country on May 3 and 4. Karnati Satyadeep topped the list for B.Tech by securing 327 marks, while Asutosh Mishra topped among the MCA aspirants in the entrance.The scheduled counseling will be held from June 10 at KIIT premises for all the programmes.

Tamil Nadu had recorded a pass percentage of 98.56 in the CBSE All-India Secondary School Examination (Class X) results.Girls recorded a pass percentage of 98.93 while the boys were close behind with 98.26.The Chennai region, as a whole, which comprises Pondicherry, Maharashtra, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Daman and Diu, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, recorded a pass percentage of 95.25%, a 2% increase over the previous year.

Madhyamik examination result

Girls proved their mettle in this year's Madhyamik examination, leading the state in the unofficial merit list.Ronita Jana of Jadavpur Vidyapith topped the examination with a whopping 798 out of 800 - one of the highest scores in the state board’s history. Her father is a schoolteacher in the Sunderbans and mother is a nurse.Ronita grew up in an eight-foot-by-eight-foot one-room house, studying between daily household chores.Mathematics. In Kolkata, 835 students secured 100 out of 100 in mathematics in comparison 343 students who had secured 100 last year. In Burdwan, 262 students scored 100 while in Midnapore East and West, 219 scored cent per cent. In North Bengal 136 candidates secured full marks in the subject.In Bidya Bharati Girls High School, 30 students secured 100, 12 students of Gokhale Memorial Girls High School and two from Balika Shiksha Sadan managed to secure full marks in mathematics. Many students secured more than 90 per cent marks in the subject.Though the number of examinees had increased by more than 76,000 this year, the pass percentage, had dropped by just 2.11 per cent.A total of 73,5578 candidates appeared for the exams this year.The 2008 exam was also the last time examinees were evaluated on traditional system.In keeping with recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework, 2005, the board will introduce grades along with numerical marks from 2009 and stop citing divisions and total marks on students’ mark sheets.

12th General Stream examinations in Gujarat

With 93.71 percent marks Rinkal Mekhecha of Girdharla Keshavji Dholakia School of Rajkot has topped in the examinations of the 12th General Stream of the Gujarat Education Board. Announcing the results of the 12th General Stream today morning Education Minister Ramanlal Vora said that this year the result is 86.99 per cent. The top ten list of the 12th General Stream has 21 students. Of these 9 are boys. Students of Rajkot dominate the top ten list with 5 students, while Ahmedabad has 3 students. One striking fact is that no boys from Ahmedabad, Baroda and Surat were able to be in the top 10 list.This year's result is a bit lower compared to the 89.25 % result of last year.A total of 3,02,182 students took the exam of which 2,62,876 cleared the exam.

Graham Higman

Professor Graham Higman, who has died aged 91, was Waynflete Professor of Pure Mathematics at Oxford University and, within his chosen field of group theory (a branch of algebra),one of the three great British figures of the 20th century.Graham Higman was born on January 19 1917, the second son of a clergyman, and educated at Sutton Secondary School, Plymouth, and at Balliol College, Oxford, to which he won a Natural Sciences scholarship — though he chose to read Mathematics in order to distinguish himself from his elder brother, who had studied Chemistry at Balliol.In 1958 Higman was elected to a Fellowship of the Royal Society and in the same year became senior research fellow at Balliol. In 1960 he was appointed Waynflete Professor of Mathematics, succeeding his old supervisor Henry Whitehead, and became a Fellow of Magdalen.Higman served as president of the London Mathematical Society from 1965 to 1967; and as well as its De Morgan Medal, won the society's Bewick Prize in 1962. He won the Royal Society's Sylvester Medal in 1979. After his retirement from Oxford he was a visiting professor at the University of Illinois from 1984 to 1986. In algebra, groups are building blocks of more elaborate algebraic structures and occur throughout mathematics . Higman carried out original work in all aspects of the theory of groups..Higman has received many honours for his outstanding work in group theory. He was awarded the Berwick Prize from the London Mathematical Society in 1962 and the De Morgan Medal from that Society in 1974.

David Mumford

David Mumford, a professor at Brown University's Applied Mathematics Division, was a co-winner Sunday of the Wolf Prize for his groundbreaking theoretical work in algebraic geometry. It is considered one of the most prestigious international honors in mathematics.Mumford, professor emeritus at Brown University and Harvard University, shared this year's prize with Pierre Deligne and Phillip Griffiths of Princeton University.According to the Wolf Foundation, he was recognized for his "work on algebraic surfaces; on geometric invariant theory; and for laying the foundations of the modern algebraic theory of the moduli space of curves and theta functions." Mumford announced he would donate his $50,000 prize money to Bir-Zeit University in the West Bank and to Gisha, an Israeli lobby that works to help Palestinian students reach their places of study.Mr. Mumford said that mathematics had been able to flourish around the world because of the frequent interchange between scholars in different countries, and that international exchanges with other scholars had been important in his own career.The Israel-based foundation was established by Ricardo Wolf, a German-born inventor, diplomat and philanthropist who spent the last years of his life as Cuba's representative in Israel, where he died in 1981.The foundation presents five or six annual prizes, often shared. Its motto is "to promote science and art for the benefit of mankind." Mumford shared his prize with two other mathematicians.

Talent Identification Programme

Duke University, Durham, USA in partnership with the IIM-Ahmedabad is conducting a training programme for a selected group of Class VIII students.The course that commenced on May 18 at the IIM-A campus has 34 students from 13 schools across four Indian cities selected by the university's Talent Identification Programme (TIP) team.The three-week course has two components of engineering— problem solving and Java video games. As a part of the course, the students will learn to make engineering models of windmills, bridges and design video games.The cost of the inaugural course has been fully borne by the TIP. It's a non-profit organisation that aims to nurture the talent of academically gifted school children across the world by running courses that broaden their horizons.

UP BOARD RESULT

Girls outshone boys by a wide overall margin in the Uttar Pradesh board exams for Class 12, results of which were declared Sunday. But no girl could find a place among the 10 toppers.The total pass percentage of girls in the Class 12 exams is 80.8, while that of boys is 54.26.The overall pass percentage in the examinations is 65.05— the lowest in the last six years.This year, 1,704,660 candidates registered for the UP Board exams, out of which 1,108,869 candidates passed the exams, which is 25 per cent less than the previous year. Among the 7,12,362 girl examinees, 5,70,489 were declared successful,. district-wise break-up of pass percentage has thrown up unique results. While the Naxal-dominated Sonebhadra district remained on top by securing 79.50 per cent, the Allahabad district came second with 74.44 pass percentage.The pass percentage of other districts is Lucknow (59.38), Kanpur (57.13), Varanasi (68.48), Kaushambi (65.56) and Kannauj (40.62). Nearly six lakh students were declared unsuccessful and the results of 2,336 candidates have been withheld for various reasons.While the percentage of students securing first and second division decreased this year, there is an increase in the number of students securing third division.Sandeep Singh, a student of Lucknow Public Inter College, topped the exams by securing 92 percent.Anurag Katiyar, a student of BSND college, Kanpur bagged the second position by securing 91.2 percent.The third position was shared by Subhanshu Gautam of Lucknow Public Inter College and Sparsh Singhal of BSND, Kanpur. Both secured 90.2 percent.

Higgs boson

Scientists are hoping that the Atlas detector, which is one of six particle physics experiments part of the Large Hadron Collider, will help unlock some deep scientific mysteries and perhaps even lead to discovery of the Higgs boson.The Large Hadron Collider is located at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland.Physicists the world over are hoping that the Atlas detector would lead to the finding of Higgs boson, sometimes called “the God particle” because it is believed its discovery will refine the understanding of exactly how the universe came to be and how it functions, and how mass came to be in the first place.It could also lead to better understanding of the fourth fundamental force gravity in terms of particle interactions, and help solve the puzzle of why gravity, while perhaps most recognizable to a lay observer, is the weakest of the fundamental forces.

PIO/NRI University

The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) Trust has been selected by the government to run the proposed Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) / Non-Resident Indians (NRI) University – the first of its kind in the country.The PIO/NRI University would have deemed university status and the according to the plan it would start functioning from the 2009-10 academic year. Though it was being set up to address the educational needs of PIOs/NRIs, 50 per cent of the students would be resident Indians.The High Level Committee on Indian Diaspora had first recommended the setting up of a PIO university in 2000. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh then made an announcement in Malaysia in 2005.

John Griggs Thompson and Jacques Tits accepted the 6 million kroner (US$1.2 million, euro756,000) Abel Prize for mathematics on Tuesday at a ceremony praising their achievements.Norway's King Harald V gave the awards to John Griggs Thompson 75who teaches at the University of Florida, and Belgian-born Jacques Tits 77 a professor emeritus at College de France in Paris who became a French citizen in 1974.they shared the prize for their outstanding achievements in algebra and especially for their shaping of modern group theory.The theory — also called the science of symmetries — can solve such everyday challenges such as a Rubik's Cube, or be used in physics, computer science and geometry.The Abel Prize was created by the Norwegian government and named after 19th-century Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel. It was first awarded in 2003.theory could be used to solve the famous Rubik's Cube, a mechanical puzzle with six sides, each divided into smaller cubes of differing colors. Group theory would allow a mathematician to calculate the number and order of rotations needed to get each of the six sides to be a specific solid color.Thomas, a native of Ottawa, Kansas, graduated from Yale University in 1955, and received his doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1959. He taught at Harvard University and then at the University of Chicago, before moving to Britain, where he spent 23 years teaching at the University of Cambridge. He now lives in Florida.Tits was born on near Brussels, Belgium. He was admitted to the Free University of Brussels at age 14, and received his doctorate at the age of 20. He also taught there, and at the University of Bonn in 1964, before he accepted the chair of group theory in the College de France 1973, a post he held until he retired in 2000.Last year's prize went to Indian-born New York University professor Srinivasa S.R. New IITs announced

on March 28, 2008 human resource development (HRD) minister, Arjun Singh announced that the government planned to establish more Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and Central Universities across the country. The plan included setting up a total of eight IITs (including four already announced) and converting Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU) into an IIT.The new IITs are being set up under the 11th five-year plan (March 2007-February 2012).Each new IIT will have 3,000 students on the campus, as per plan. This will include 2,000 undergraduates, 500 postgraduates, 400 doctorates and 100 post-doctorates. Each new IIT will admit 500 students for BTech programme, 250 for MTech, 100 for PhD and about 10 for post-doctorate fellowship programme each year, making a total of 860 students each year.The new IITs shall receive capital funding of Rs 2,500 crores to Rs 4,000 crores (Rs 25-40 billion or US $625 million to $1 billion) per IIT, spread over a period of five-six years. This generous funding will help new IITs in becoming world-class as the existing ones. The funding need is based on the amount spent on the last brand-new IIT at Guwahati, in the state of Assam, which was set up in 1994 (under Assam Accord) at a total cost of Rs 1,500 crores (Rs 15 billion).Each new IIT will be mentored by an existing IIT (patron) nearby. The respective state governments are also planning to get foreign collaborations for the new IITs, similar to what was done to the existing IITs before. Among the possibilities is collaboration with Japan for the IIT in Andhra Pradesh and with South Korea for IIT in Orissa.HRD ministry has also announced a plan for the conversion of IT BHU, Varanasi into an IIT. The decision was based on long-standing ties of the institute with IIT-JEE (since 1972) and the academic standard comparable to IITs. The institute shall be known as IIT-BHU, Varanasi after conversion.

With an outstanding 91.75 overall pass percentage, the Chennai region has bagged the top position across the country in the Central Board of Secondary Education’s class XII examinations. Ajmer region is next with a pass percentage of 86. 33. Delhi has bagged the third position, one up from the fourth it held last year, with a pass percentage of 83.69 followed by Panchkula, Allahabad and Guwahati.Based on the National Curriculum Framework-2005, the CBSE had redesigned the question papers in all the major subjects for Classes XII and X for the 2008 examinations to assess Higher Order Thinking Skills in students by focussing on evaluating their abilities to reason and analyse.As many as 844 students appeared for class XII examinations in the disabled category, achieving a pass percentage of 86.46. Five differently-abled students have scored above 90 per cent.The CBSE will award 4,548 merit certificates this year, the maximum going to the Allahabad region (1067), followed by Delhi (969) and Chennai (936).The pass percentage for candidates from the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas was the highest among all the other institutions standing at 92.44 per cent compared with 90.11 per cent in 2007.Kendriya Vidyalayas that had registered an overall pass percentage of 93.14 last year dipped this year to 91 per cent. The Central Tibetans are in the third position with a pass percentage of 85.81.The government and government-aided schools have bettered their record with pass percentages of 81.96 and 78.61 respectively. It stood at 78.59 and 75.93 per cent respectively in 2007.Foreign schools have secured a pass percentage of 92.15, though it has come down from 92.96 per cent in 2007.Also, the number of girls securing 60 per cent or more has been increasing with each passing year. This year, 88,183 girls have achieved this score.in Mathematics, 1,146 students got full marks in 2008compare to last year 344 in 2007.In Physics, 26 students had got full marks in 2007, but the corresponding number this year is only 4.55,838 students will take the compartment exams on July 19, including 16,134 from Delhi. Results for Class 10 will be announced at 8 am on May 28 or 29 for all regions.

Supreme Court stays High Court judgement

The Supreme Court quashed the Madras High Court order that had earlier directed Union Public Service Commissions to redraw the merit list prepared for the Civil Services Exam for 2005 ignoring Rule 16(2).The Madras HC had asked the commission to treat reserved category student under merit list as unreserved candidate.This time the result of Civil Services Exam 2007 was in accordance with HC judgement and was considered as provisional result. The Apex Court earlier on March 20, has said that going against Rule 16(2) is unconstitutional and marked that taking out the privileged given to the reserved candidate is a mockery to the concept of entire rule of reservation and that the HC judgement will reduce the number of post reserved for SC/ST/OBC and will add the same number of posts to unreserved category.
The Rule 16(2) ensure a person belonging to reserved group if get selected under general merit are able to get higher preference of service and are not placed at disadvantageous position with respect to other candidates of their community.

Nearly 1500 boys and girls will be appearing for the third edition of the Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE 2008). They will be competing for just 34 seats in the five-year integrated Master of Arts degree course offered at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Madras).The courses were introduced in 2006. IIT Madras has restricted the student intake to just 30 seats – 10 each in the specialisations of Development Studies, Economics and English Studies.With the Supreme Court clearing the union government's proposal to introduce reservation for the Other Backward Classes, IIT Madras has gone ahead and increased the number of seats by four this year taking the tally of the number of seats to 34.The aspirants will be required to answer 180 questions in as many minutes. The examination will test the reading, grammar and vocabulary skills of candidates in the English language section, which constitutes 25% of the question paper.The analytical and quantitative ability section constitutes another 25%. The remaining 50% of the questions are from the General Studies, which encompasses Indian Economics, Indian Society, Contemporary World Affairs in the Post-World War II period, Environment and Ecology.IIT Madras had introduced the course in order to cater to the manpower requirements of the academia, the government and NGOs. As many as 318 students were selected for the second stage. Mumbai is all set to host the 19th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2008 from July 13 to 20. The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) will organise the prestigious event with the support of the Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Human Resource Development on the premises of the HBCSE campus in Mankhurd. As many as 200 students form 55 countries will participate to vie for gold, silver and bronze medals besides some other awards.The Olympiad exam consists of a theory test and an experiment test, each for five hours duration.In the past, India has also played host to the International Mathematics Olympiad in 1996 International Chemistry Olympiad in 2001 and International Astronomy Olympiad in 2006.

NASSCOM along with A.T Kearney, released the findings of a first of its kind report on the assessment of 50 locations in India suitable for the IT - BPO industry titled ‘Roadmap ‘Location Roadmap For IT- BPO Growth: Assessment Of 50 Leading Cities’.According to the study, Tier 2 cities have the potential to account for 40% of the total projected BPO and IT jobs by 2018. But this would be possible if the government is able to provide an environment favorable to growth in this sector
The study adds that big BPO hubs like NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Pune will continue to be the leading destinations. But cities like Ahmedabad, Kochi, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Indore, Jaipur, Lucknow, Madurai, Mangalore, Nagpur, Thiruvananthapuram, Vadodara, Tiruchirapalli and Visakhapatnam are fast emerging .The report states that if the industry follows a balanced growth, non-leading cities could provide three million direct jobs, 40%of the projected employment by 2018. Currently the leading locations account for over 85% of IT sector employment and over 90% of the BPO employment in the country.

THE three-year B Sc course will be replaced by the American model, which is a four-year programme. Students will receive common grounding in all subjects of science in the first year. It will be followed by specialisation in their area of interest, with the flexibility to choose electives. The revamp aim at bridging the gulf between what the college products know and what the industry needs. The gulf presently is rather wide. The products that our colleges turn out are not industry-ready or job-ready. These products should be put through an induction course if they are to be useful at least to some extent to the industry right from day one. According to the proposal now being considered, the revamped B Sc course will be initially available only in institutions of repute like the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and the various Indian Institutes of Technology across the country. Subsequently, universities across the country will provide the course.

Unfortunately not more than 25% of these freshers (barring IIT products) were found employable by the large industries and multinational companies. The reason is that a good number of these colleges lack basic infrastructure to impart a minimum set of relevan skills,knowledge.It appears that there exists about 1,700 business schools in our country sending out about 100,000 degree diploma holders of management. But their quality in general (with of course, a few good exceptions), judged through accreditation, recognition and performance of candidates is reckoned quite unsatisfactory .

IIT Medak

The new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Andhra Pradesh will commence classes from this academic year (2008-09) at a makeshift campus in Medak district.Classes will be held at the makeshift campus at the Ordnance factory at Eddumailaram in Medak until the permanent one comes at Kandi in the same district.IIT would initially have five disciplines with 40 students each. The first batch is likely to start in July.The central government had last year decided to set up two new IITs in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar.The state government in December selected Medak district as the location for the IIT in view of its proximity to the state capital. The previous government had suggested the temple town of Basara in Adilabad district as the location for the proposed institute.The IIT in Medak will be the eighth in the country. Seven IITs are already functioning in Mumbai, New Delhi, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati, Kanpur and Chennai.Meanwhile, Japan has evinced interest in collaborating with IIT-Medak. It is also keen to extend financial aid of Rs.40 million to the new institute.

The IIT-JEE scores are used as a benchmark for admissions into the seven IITs located in Kharagpur, Kanpur, Delhi, Chennai, Bombay, Roorkee and Guwahati. IT-BHU, ISM-Dhanbad, MERI-Kolkata and NIFFT-Ranchi are some other institutes which use JEE scores and IISER-Pune and Kolkata, and IIST-Trivandrum is on the extended merit list. As many as 3.2 lakh students — 70,000 more than the previous year — will vie for 4,500 general seats, as per current statistics.This year’s question paper followed the pattern introduced last year, with two sessions of three hours each, both testing students in mathematics, physics and chemistry.students felt that while the chemistry section was relatively easier and physics was moderate, it was a different story with mathematics.

A parliamentary standing committee has recommended that UPSC should consider conducting its examinations on the format adopted for GMAT, IIT and IIM entrance tests.The Union Public Service Commission conducts various tests for recruitment to government services like civil services, forest service, engineering service and defence services and most of these are annual, conducted in various phases.The panel also favoured increasing the number of UPSC members.

Ask IITians, a voluntary organisation, has released the list of top 20 colleges after conducting a survey about educational standards, teaching, placements and infrastructure in these institutes by talking to students and alumini of IITs, NITs and engineering colleges across the country.According to the survey IIT, Delhi ranked first in the country followed by IIT, Kanpur (second), IIT, Mumbai (third), IIT Chennai(fourth), IIT Kharagpur(fifth), Technology Institute, Varanasi affiliated to the Benaras Hindu University(sixth) and IIT Guwahati(seventh).: National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal ranks eighth among the top 20 institutes in the country.

IIT set to double fee to Rs 2 lakh

After the approval of Council of IITs, IIT, Kanpur planning to raise the fee.At present a BTech student has to pay Rs 13,500 as semester fee, which is being raised to Rs 25,000 per semester. The total will work out to Rs 2 lakh, in place of the current Rs 1.08 lakh, an increase of almost 100 per cent.The MTech two-year course fee is being raised to Rs 25,000 per semester. An MTech student has to appear for four semesters over two years. Similarly, the fee for MBA, and Master of Design too has been raised to Rs 25,000 per semester. For the MSc and PhD programmes too, plans are afoot to double the fee.

All India Engineering Entrance Examination

Around nine lakh candidates appeared for the All India Engineering/Architecture Entrance Examination-2008 at 1,299 centres on Sunday.This year saw an increase of around 220,000 candidates for AIEEE.The examinations were at two centres outside India — in Riyadh and Dubai. AIEEE is held for admission to 20 National Institutes of Technology and some deemed universities.As many as 863,000 students were registered for examination — 858,000 for B. E./ B. Tech. and 48,000 for B. Architecture/ B. Planning.Selected candidates as per ranking get an opportunity to take admission in the national institutes of technology (NITs), 13 deemed universities and four Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Allahabad, Gwalior, Guwahati and Hyderabad. The applicative questions, including paragraph questions, are comprehension type, while the assertion reasoning type questions test students on logic.

The meritorious students would take admission into the prestigious national institutes of technology.AIEEE is conducted the Central Board of Secondary Examination where candidates are ranked on all India basis and also according to their state. So they have an all India rank and a state rank. questions in physics and chemistry are based on practical applications.in mathematics there were "some tricky" questions.Questions asked were less as compared to last year, but it was of no avail as the standard of the paper was high. total of 105 questions, fifteen less than last year's 120 questions, were there in the paper containing 315 marks. There was also negative marking for each incorrect answer. Total marks last year was 360.

IIM-A LIST.

iim-A is expected to declare the general quota list by May 1 and the OBC quota list can be expected not before second week of May.The institute will be introducing the 27 per cent OBC quota in a phased manner over a period of three years. The first year of implementation of the quota, that is 2008-09 will introduce 6 per cent of the 27 per cent, 2009-10 will introduce 15 per cent and finally 2010-11 will introduce the full 27 per cent of the OBC quota.

AIEEE 2008

AIEEE Entrance examination would consist of two papers i.e. 1st paper consisting of three parts of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics of equal weightage with objective type questions for BE/B.Tech courses and 2nd paper consistingof Mathematics,Aptitude Test and Drawing for B. Architecture and B. Planning. The Aptitude Test is designed to evaluate candidate’s perception, imagination, observation, creativity and architectural awareness.There will be objective type questions with four options having single correct answer. For each incorrect response one third of the total marks allotted to the question would be deducted. No deduction from the total score will, however, be made if no response is indicated for an item in the answer sheet. The candidates are advised not to attempt such item in the answer sheet if they are not sure of the correct response. More than one answer indicated against a question will be deemed as incorrect response and will be negatively marked. All objective type questions are required to be answered on specially designed machine gradable answer sheets. Answers are to be marked using ball point pen (black/blue) only. For the purpose of evaluation, Test Booklet Code as printed in the Answer Sheet on Side-2 will be accepted as final.On the basis of performance in AIEEE, separate rank lists will be prepared for B.E./B.Tech. and B.Arch/B.Planning. Score Card indicating All India Rank with total marks and marks in each subject shall be sent to all candidates appearing in AIEEE.The score card will be dispatched to the candidates from 12.06.2008 to 28.06.2008 under Certificate of Posting (UPC).

two Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) professors have designed a collapsible container that could change the dynamics of the trade forever.The new container, designed by Anoop Chawla and Sudipto Mukherjee from the mechanical engineering department of IIT, Delhi, can be collapsed or erected in less than four minutes. STUDENTS IN AIPMT

There the drop in the number of students who took the all India pre-medical test this year, from over 2 lakh students last year. The entrance for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences is a similar story. The number of students has dropped from 80,000 in 2006 to 65,000 in 2007.This at a time when students writing the IIT joint entrance exam has jumped by one lakh this year. That’s not all, those taking the AIEEE, the All Indian Engineering Entrance, has also increased from 6.5 lakh in 2007 to just over 8 lakh this year.In a country like ours, with a doctor to population ratio of 60 per lakh, a drop in the number of students opting for medicine is definitely not good news.

State Entrance Examination (SEE) 2008

SEE is a joint entrance examination conducted by UPTU for admissions in management, technical, pharmacology, architecture, hotel management and engineering courses being run in over 150 government and private engineering and technical institutes all over the state. All these colleges are affiliated to UPTU. Over three lakh candidates appeared in the entrance test held on Saturday and Sunday in around 300 centres across the state.On Sunday, the entrance test was for admissions in BTech course in which over 1.92 lakh students appeared in 268 centres in the state.

Edward Lorenz

THE father of chaos theory has died at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, aged 90.Edward Norton Lorenz was born on May 23 1917 at West Hartford, Connecticut, and from his earliest years was devoted to science. "As a boy I was always interested in doing things with numbers and was also fascinated by changes in the weather," he later wrote.He went to Dartmouth College, from which he graduated in Mathematics in 1938, before taking a postgraduate degree from Harvard in 1940. During the Second World War, Lorenz worked as a weather forecaster in the US Army Air Corps and, after the cessation of hostilities, took up graduate studies in Meteorology; he earned master's and doctoral degrees in the subject from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1943 and 1948.He joined the staff of the department in 1948 and became an assistant professor in 1955. He was promoted to professor in 1962 and served as head of the department from 1977 to 1981.He became emeritus professoin 1987 .Edward Lorenz came up with the concept that small effects lead to big changesthe "butterfly effect".He explained how a butterfly flapping its wings in Brazil changes the moving atmosphere in ways that could later trigger tornadoes in Texas. His discovery brought about "one of the most dramatic changes in mankind's view of nature since Sir Isaac Newton", said the committee that awarded Dr Lorenz the 1991 Kyoto Prize for basic sciences.Dr Lorenz, a meteorologist, came up with his chaos theory when he noticed the vastly different answers triggered by less than 0.0001 per cent error from a computer. That error and observation led to his seminal butterfly effect paper in 1972.An exceptionally fit man, who enjoyed cross-country skiing, hiking in the Appalachians and was hillwalking until a week before his death, Lorenz was a kind and unassuming figure. He was always interested in other interpretations of his theories and enjoyed meeting academic colleagues.As a boy I was always interested in doing things with numbers, and was also fascinated by changes in the weather," Lorenz wrote in an autobiography.Meteorologists today base their forecasts on his techniques. Lorenz's 1967 book "The Nature and Theory of the General Circulation of the Atmosphere" is considered a classic textbook in meteorology.The concept of small changes turning into big effects also influenced many basic sciences

There are a total of 6,600 seats. Out of proposed 8 new IITs, at least three are expected to be operational this year, which will add 2,000 more seats.The entrance exam was the first to be conducted after the Supreme Court gave its green signal to 27 per cent quota for Other Backward Castes(OBC) in institutions of higher education including the Indian Institutes of Technology(IITs) and the Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs).The test was conducted at 600 centres with around 80 students vying for a single seat. Last year, about 2.5 lakh students had taken the entrance exam.IIT Roorkee has already invited applications with the OBC status details of the candidates.The first paper had 69 questions and 82 marks per subject, totalling 246 marks. Paper II, held between 2 pm and 5 pm, had 66 questions, amounting to 243 marks. Maximum marks in both the papers were 489. Overall, Maths was voted the most difficult section, more so in the second section than in the first. Though the first too, was found to be quite difficult because of its emphasis on co-ordinate geometry and calculus. Chemistry was felt to be the easiest among the three subjects.Dubai has become the first venue outside India where the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) held their joint entrance examination this year.The Gulf is home to around 5.5 million expatriate Indians and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)affiliated schools are spread across the six Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The result is expected to be out by May end.

OBC quota IITs and IIMs

Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh said the 27 per cent quota for OBCs would be implemented in IITs and IIMs.The apex court upheld the 27 per cent quota for OBCs in higher education institutions.The government also announced the 27 per cent OBC reservation would be implemented in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences from the coming academic session. Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) had already made provisions for the OBC students in the application forms for their Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for the next academic year.However, IITs are yet to upgrade their physical infrastructure and increase faculty members to cope with the 27 per cent reservation for OBCs as per the Supreme Court's directives. it was easier for IIMs to expand their infrastructure but the IITs have to get more equipped laboratories, classrooms as well as student accommodation.

Around 3 lakh students are expected to take the IIT-JEE this year.The format having become objective type,so the entire effort should be to maximise the number of correct answers.This year also there will be two, 3 Hour (PCM Combined) objective type papers. Cut-off marks will be decided by summing the marks of the subject in both the papers. Each subject will thus have its own cut-off.individual subject cut-off will be about 35% , while overall cut-off is 45%.the entire effort should be to maximise the number of correct answers,if you attempt 60% of the questions and do them correctly, you will end up with good marks.

25% decrese in AIPMT

1.6 lakh students appeared for the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) conducted by the CBSE. It's a significant - 40,000 - drop in numbers, a substantial 25% decrease from last year. For Delhi Only 26,366 students appeared for the paper, as against the almost 40,000 students who sat for the entrance in 2007.more than 8 lakh applicants have already signed on for the 2008 AIEEE - an engineering entrance conducted by CBSE. educationists feel reason of this drop are the low salaries, long period of study and the arduous road to success.There has been a drastic drop in the number of students opting for Biology in the senior secondary level.
