All kinds of theories have popped up to attempt to explain the omission, the most salacious of which claim that Nobel hated all mathematicians because his wife was schtupping one on the side. Not likely. The most probable reasons suggested are: (1) Sweden already had a big, fancy prize for mathematics, bestowed by the journal Acta Mathematica; and (2) The man just didn't like math all that much
